We have been working with Alexa since the early days and are experienced in developing back-end integration between Alexa and internet/corporate services. Alexa connects with services via "Skills". These skills define how Alexa will handle a given request, what information to extract from the spoken word and how a response is rendered. A simple skill is a request -> return model where you ask Alexa for something which is then retrieved and returned verbally. A good example here would be "Alexa, Ask GEN for contact information", from which Amazon detect "Ask GEN" then pass "for Contact Information" to our back end which then returns our contact information in TEXT format for the Echo to read back to the requester.
With the ECHO SPOT & SHOW the game changes yet again with the ability to not only return something to be read out, but also pictures and text to be displayed.
